| Step Two - make/edit a list |
Start Text Tree. The main screen will come up and you will see three areas labeled with "Tree", "Title" and "Text". In the box labeled "Tree" click on the words "Project title". It should now be highlighted and the words "Project title should now appear in the box labeled "Title". In this title box, change the words to read "Saturday's Plan". We are now going to add some activities. Click the "add" button. Type "mow lawn" in the box. Now hit the Enter key or click Enter. The activity is then added to your list. Click the "add" button again, and add a "put gas in car" activity. In the same manner, add four more activities: "go grocery shopping", "take a shower", "wash the car", and "get ready for date". You now have a list. We are going to edit it. You have decided not to wash your car, select "wash the car" by clicking on it in the tree. Click the remove button and a confirmation dialog box will appear. Click on the remove button of this dialog and the activity will be removed. You have decided that you should go grocery shopping first. Select "go grocery shopping" again. Now click the "Move Up" button until "go grocery shopping" is at the top of the list. You can rearrange the items in the list by using the "Move Up" and "Move Down" commands. |
| back to top |
| Step Three - add details |
Select "get ready for date" from your list. Now add two sub-activities (by using the "Add" button as we have done): "make reservations" and "do laundry". Now we decide that "do laundry" should not be under "get ready for date", but that "take a shower" should. Select "do laundry" in the tree, then click the "Up a Level" button. Now select "take a shower" and move it up or down the list using the "Move Up" and "Move Down" buttons until it is directly above the item labeled "get ready for date". Now click "Down a Level" to put it under "get ready for date". If at any time a sub list is hidden, just click on the plus sign next to the list header. |

| Using Text Tree |
| This section tells how to use Text Tree and its various tools. |
| back to top |
| Editing a project |
| These are the most essential operations in Text Tree. There are two basic actions that are taken: adding/removing things and moving stuff. |
| back to top |
| Adding/Removing things |
Adding text Text can be added to any item in the tree. Simply select an item by clicking on it in the tree, then write the text you want in the box labeled "text". Adding Items To add a subitem to any other item in the tree, simply select what will be the "parent" item, click the "Add" button, then enter in a title for the new "child" subitem. If no item is selected when you click the "Add" button, the item will be added as a child of the root item (the top-level item that originally says "Project title"). Removing items Just select the item you want to remove by clicking on its title in the tree. Next, click the "Remove" button you will be prompted to make sure you really want to remove the item. Warning! All items that are under the item being deleted (all of its children, and their children...) will also be deleted. |
| back to top |
| Moving Stuff |
Up and down in a list Select the item you want to move by clicking on its title in the tree. Click the "Move Up" and "Move Down" buttons to position the item in the list. Up and down levels Select the item you want to move by clicking on its title in the tree. Click the "Up a Level" button. The item will be moved to be on the list of its parent. When the "Down a Level" button is pressed, the item is moved to be a child of whatever item is next in the same list.
Limitations
- No item can be moved up to the same level as the root item (the one that starts out as "Project title")
- If there is no next item in the list when you click "Down a Level", nothing happens.

| Right click menu |
The right click menu in the tree editor is new for version 1.1.
It allows for two new types of operations: Expanding/Collapsing and Cut/Copy/Paste of nodes. Expanding/Collapsing You can expand or collapse all decendants of a node by right clicking on the node in the tree window and selecting "Expand Completely" or "Collapse Completely" as desired. Cut/Copy/Paste These editing commands work on the selected node in the tree view. |

| Saving/opening saved projects |
Save Select "save" from the File menu. If your current project has been saved before, it will simply save your current changes to the same file. If you have not saved yet, the "Save As" dialog will be brought up for you to choose a file name.
Save As If you want to save the project you are working on under a different file name, click the "Save As" option from the File menu.
Open Simply choose the "Open" option in the file menu then navigate to your saved file. |

| Printing |
There are only two options you need to set when you print. First the "Starting Node" function. You have two choices there:
- Root node - include everything in your project.
- Currently selected node - print the information from the currently selected node and its branch as if it were the "root" node.
The other option to set is how you would like the output formatted. Your choices are listed under "Print Options". As you select an option, an example is shown of the selected formatting. |
| back to top |
| Exporting |
Exporting is handled through a wizard. You start choose a node to start from (root or currently selected), then you just contine answering the questions an clicking "next" until you can click finish. Text Tree will then display a message telling you the export went ok. There are currently four types of files Text Tree can export standard text files (.txt), html files, Noterrific .ntn files, and Treepad .hjt files. |

| Templates |
Templates trees that are meant to be used a guide to producing some kind of document. Using templates is easy. Just choose the a template from the "Templates" menu and a new document will be created for you. Creating templates is another function that is locked for unregistered users. It is easy to accomplish, though. When you have a tree you want to save as a template, choose "Save Current Tree as Template" from the "Templates" menu. You will be prompted to enter a name for the tree. The next time you start Text Tree, the template you just saved will appear on the "Templates" list. Warning: be aware that no information from the scratch pad is saved in the template. |
| back to top |
| Spell Checker |
| You can use the spell checker to check your entire tree, or just the currently selected node by selecting the appropriate option from the Spell Checker menu. |
| back to top |
| Scratch Pad |
The scratch pad is simply a place to keep notes about your project. To add a scratch to the list, type your note or idea into the box next to the label "New Scratch:", then click the "Add Scratch" button. Scratches can be moved up and down the list by selecting the scratch you wish to move by clicking on it, then clicking the "Up" and "Down" buttons until it is moved to the intended place in the list. Scratches can be deleted by selecting the scratch you wish to delete, then clicking the "Remove Selected Scratch" button. Scratches can be saved to a seperate file. Just click the "Save Scratches File" button. When loading scratches from a file, the scratches in the file are added to your current list of scratches. You don't lose anything. |
